KeyNote is great, but…

This app’s lack of “Save As” is annoying. The app’s developers don’t understand this. Every week, I use keynote to teach Sunday School. I like it, but I always open the previous week’s lesson, update it, and then want to Save As, as I have in every other Mac app since the original Word and Excel apps from the 1980s. The app’s developers think I should open it, “duplicate” it, and then rename it. It’s not intuitive and makes no sense. Maybe Apple will read this, say “Oops,” and restore this feature.

Free, cool

Ok, This app may be overshadowed by Microsoft Powerpoint. It may even have more features than Powerpoint. Want to know why Keynote is better? Free Keynote? Powerpoint cost? 140 dollars, not 10, 20, 40. True. You could buy less office. Non-free. The cheapest plans cost $70 a year or $150 one-time, more than powerpoint. But enough about price. There are problems. But they’re more annoyances than roadblocks, and I’ve never encountered any of them, except for having to update, which just requires updating Keynote. Powerpoint is also criticised. Don’t buy Powerpoint. Free.

Update adds/removes.

Keynote has recently received major updates, including an object list, text masking, and collaborative features. Other features have reduced its functionality, frustrating me (a power user). Face detection is one example. This feature centres human faces to make masking easier. The feature was implemented with no options, parameters, or variables. If you’re cutting out a person or creating another artistic effect, the subject is repositioned within the mask. It’s frustrating and a step backwards. Please, Apple Keynote team, if you read this review (or my other feedback), disable face detection.

Unstable and quirky

Since about a decade, I’ve used Keynote for “slide” presentations with trepidation. I’ve spent all afternoon working on a three-day presentation. I always save my project offsite because you never know when Keynote will quit, drop photos, or do something inexplicable. Autosave stopped working today, so I manually saved often. Keynote suddenly deleted most of my work. My offsite backup was mostly intact, but a few photos were missing. A prompt said “Your images may look different.” Huh? I’ve spent a half hour trying to download the latest version, but it won’t finish. I’ll need PowerPoint. Sad.
